So far in Costa Rica November has been an excellent month for Sailfish – and Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) too – off the Central Pacific coast, the best in the past few years. The latest captain and boat to report a great day is Captain Bryan Porras on the newly launched 43ft Sea Fly fishing out of Los Sueños Marina; Bryan came back with five Sailfish releases, plus a Dorado into the bargain.
On his second trip of the new season, Captain Bill McMenemy on the 31ft Straight up a Twist out of Los Sueños, also had a very satisfactory day, going 6-10 on Sailfish. As for Dorado, the Good Days reeled ‘em in: out of Pez Vela Marina in Quepos, Captain Manuel Gabuardi on the 31ft Good Day caught seven Dorado, along with a Sailfish release; while Captain Esteban Marcos on the ‘big sister’, the 36ft Good Day Too out of Los Sueños, caught a baker’s dozen (13) Dorado, and released a couple of Sailfish. On an earlier charter, as well as releasing five Sailfish, Captain Esteban encountered a bunch of Yellowfin Tuna, catching three in the 40-50lb range.
There has also been a lot of action inshore. This courtesy of Captain MJ Alligood, 34ft Epic fish out of Los Sueños: ‘We spent the morning chasing Skipjacks around with the fly rod, and then spent a couple hours using the
skippies as bait, landing a 50lb (photo, above) and a 65lb Roosterfish.’
