OFF QUEPOS, 2,842 BILLFISH RELEASED IN JUST FOUR DAYS
Quepos OWC winners Extraordinary numbers always highlight the annual Offshore World Championship, now held at the Pez Vela Marina in Quepos on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast. This year, the 67 boats, with teams from more than 20 countries (317 anglers in all) released an extraordinary total of 2,842 billfish, including 2,824 Sailfish, 14 Blue Marlin, two Black Marlin and two Striped Marlin in this great four-day billfish tournament, held on April 13-16. Also large enough to be counted in the overall point total were 13 Dorado, three Wahoo and a Yellowfin Tuna.
The race for top team was a photo finish. First was Sea Horse Anglers Club Billfish Tournament from Bermuda (photo) with 13400 points, followed by Torneio de Marlin do Rio de Janeiro from Brazil, also with 13400 points, and Torneio de Pesca Open 25, again from Brazil, with 13200 points. Kudos to everyone participating, especially to tournament organizers Lynda Wilson, Dan Jacobs and Kat Haack, among others, for a job well done.
As far as the individual boats and captains, congratulations go to Tuna Bite (David Dobbins crewing) with 15600 points, Epic (Captain MJ Alligood) with 15400, and Sea Fly (Captain David Mesen) with 13828 points, who finished 1-2-3 as top boats.
