It is always a pleasure to begin a review of the past week’s sportfishing activities in Costa Rica with a singular achievement, Captain Dave Mothershead on the 56ft Done Deal from the private side of Los Sueños Marina, achieved the coveted IGFA Grand Slam, releasing two Striped Marlin, one Blue Marlin and 12 Sailfish. Other Los Sueños boats have had similar success: Captain Juan Carlos Fallas on the 42ft Spanish Fly, released one
Striped Marlin and 10 Sailfish, and caught two Dorado and two Yellowfin Tuna. Two days before that, Juan Carlos had released one Striped Marlin and 12 Sailfish, and caught two Dorado.
Captain MJ Alligood on the 34ft Epic, also out of Los Sueños, went 10-20 on Sailfish, and caught three Dorado; while Captain Carlos Arguedas, 28ft Wing Man, caught eight nice Dorado between 25 and 35 lbs in three hours’ fishing. Moving south, first to Puerto Jiménez on the beautiful Osa Peninsula, Antonio Varcasia, who came all the way from Italy to Costa Rica in search of saltwater monsters for his TV show, boated and released this huge 75lb + Roosterfish on a Crocodile Bay Lodge boat. And Americana Sportfishing
clients Janice and David Waltz, on the 37ft Cazador out of Golfito with IGFA award-winning captain Bobby McGuinness, released two Blue Marlin and a Sailfish.
Up north, in Guanacaste, the winds were blowing somewhat, but that didn’t deter Captain Skeet Warren on the 42ft Bushwacker, who released a Blue Marlin, and boated six Dorado. A couple of days earlier Skeet, in his own words, ‘went 0-1 on Sailfish, boated five nice Dorado, and ran from the wind all day.’ And last but not least, we wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas. Season’s greetings, everyone!
